the manifestations of earth and sky, these being the macrocosm and men
the microcosm.
The forces and collaborative work of these five phases are described
based on the qualities and work of exchange between these elements of
nature. This is demarcated within a circular process in nature, society,
or within the self.
Each phase is essential to start something, to take it toward a
finish, to finish it and analyze it, to enjoy and rest, and finally start
again. This is just like the process in which a plant is born, grows,
bears fruit, reproduces and dies. Here, stillness, rest, restoration, and
accumulation of energies take place, to finally start again from its seed.
The prince and his work
Fou Hi, a Chinese prince, dedicated much of his time to the
contemplation of nature, the earth and all the possible manifestations
that occurred every moment in the sky.
Fou Hi observed how these continually depended on the movements
of the sun and the earth. Slowly he realized the enormous importance
that all these movements and the position of the stars had on life in
our planet. These observations finally led him to the theory of the five
elements. Fou Hi played a very important role in the development of
this theory. He also organized the 12-year calendar and the four seasons.
Observing the different opposite situations in nature that occurred
on the two opposite sides of a mountain during sunrise and sunset,
he finally found that there is basically only one power that forms the
basis of life. He saw how this power of life dominates and contains
absolutely everything. Qi, the energy in all its forms, also runs through
our body and keeps us balanced and healthy.
All the changes and exchanges in heaven and earth form the basis
of thinking of the Yin-Yang polarities. These polarities are active in a
