                     Antagonistic Effect – Opposite Functions

What is special about these two parts is their opposite effect.
When one is in operation, the other should not be working, to avoid
the body becoming out of balance. However, what is special here is
that we can see the Yin-Yang principles. As we have seen before, Yin
and Yang are not absolute but relative concepts. Yin contains a small
part of Yang and vice versa. So, what happens? How do we see these
Eastern principles in our Western systems?
We know the statement “fight, fly, or freeze” as reactions of the
body for defense mechanisms in a threatening situation. The two
systems are represented by these concepts. It is clear that we cannot
fight or fly or freeze at the same time, because these are opposites. We
can say that before we start fighting, there is a bit of freezing and that
at the beginning of freezing there was a bit of fighting. This is what
we see in figure number 2 below. In chapter 4 we have already seen
             the Yin and Yang theory.
We can assign the concepts Yin and Yang to these two parts of
our Autonomic Nervous System. The body is unable to operate these
two parts simultaneously without causing damage.
