                              Step 6. The Golden Juice

                 When I ask where people think digestion begins, the answers are
             generally in the stomach, in the throat, or something similar.
                 If we think about it, the first thing we do is introduce the food
             into the mouth. I once heard that a sage said: “Drink your solid foods
             and bite your liquids.” This may seem odd to you, but I will explain
             why it is not.
                 In the mouth, we produce something that in Eastern medicine is
             called the Golden Juice; we call this saliva. Saliva contains a variety of
             elements to start digestion, primarily the digestion of carbohydrates.
                 When you start eating your food in your mouth and you want to
             help your body perform its functions correctly, you should start right
             here. The most essential part of digestion is to chew your food well.
             When you chew, you are performing the first step of good digestion.
