Understanding the Correlations
We take the Wood element as an example. This element contains
two organic functions: that of the Liver and that of the Gallbladder.
The Liver is Yin and the Gallbladder is Yang. (Generally, Yang organs
are hollow).
In the schematic Figure 1 (above), we see that each element is
energetically connected to the next one.
The previous element performs the nutritional function for the next
element. This means that the Water element feeds the Wood element.
In Eastern terms, this means the Water element is the “mother” of the
Wood element. So, here, the element Wood is the mother of the Fire
element, Fire is the mother of the Earth element, Earth is the mother
of the Metal element and Metal is mother of the Water element.
As a mother, the element performs the function of nutrition. But
logically, if the child asks for a lot of food, then the mother can run
out. Now, a series of changes follow that cause an imbalance in this
circular system.
Take the Water element as the mother of the Wood element, for
example. Water feeds Wood. As we know, each element is related to an
emotion. The emotion corresponding to Wood is Anger. A controlled
Anger represents a sense of assertiveness. At this level, Anger is a healthy
emotion if it’s not repressed and if we can express it reasonably. It helps
us feel pushed to act, to look for our dreams and ideals.
When this emotion is not controlled, is being suppressed or
avoiding being expressed, the Anger increases and causes an imbalance
in our body-mind. This will gradually result in complaints, such as
irritability and these will grow over time if they are not listened to or
if measures are not taken to restore balance.
As a result of this imbalance we can see that a congestion arises,
where the Qi (or energy) is not able to circulate freely and therefore
will not be able to freely carry the blood to the necessary parts in the
